Rarely do we take a look back and consider how we got from there to here. Parents, interviewers, friends, and even people you have just met think nothing of asking some form of the “where do you see yourself in ten years” question. Who else but you will ask “where were you ten years ago?” Speculation nets you nearly zero information. Reflection offers an infinite supply.
Painting a picture of your future self is an exercise in hope. We are so encouraged not to live in the past that we become flippant with our own experiences. Few people would come up with a path forward for themselves that is more difficult than the path traveled. Reflection on those past experiences provides the guiding light to the way ahead.
Do not dwell, but reminisce. Do not agonize, but understand. Remember.
