When my first child came along, it was really natural to give her a middle name matching my grandmother’s first name. Grandma Lorraine has been ever present in my life. I’m pleased the very thought of my daughter will remind me of my grandmother for decades to come.
Years passed without me visibly recognizing her age. It’s strange with grandparents. They were old when you met them and they are the same old when you’re twenty. Then suddenly they visibly age over night. Reality is you never looked too closely. It is human nature, but you still feel guilty.
She’s 92 now and seemingly surprised every day that she is still marching around this rock. Yet I can’t imagine being without her. It hits home just how lucky I am every time I visit, laying one of my children in her arms. Just how lucky I am to have had her presence for 33 years.
